Summer brings the warm air that
fireflies love. Fireflies or “lightning
bugs” are beetles that glow in the
dark. They live around wet areas
and long grasses. Shut off the
lights at home. Or, go out after
dark with a grownup. You may see
fireflies light up the dark!
In summer, many wild birds fly in
from the south. Rasha Hamid wrote
the book, How to Bird. She says
anyone can be a birder, a person
who watches wild birds. Go out
and listen — near water or trees
if you can. What bird sounds do
you hear (chirps or woowoos or
gurgles)? What are the birds’
colors and shapes? Write down
or draw what you hear or see!
