Critter Clues FROM PAGE 7
The house fly is one of the most common flies in the world. Scientists
think it may have first lived in the Middle East or Central Asia, but now it is
found almost everywhere people live. You may find winged adults stopping
on your garbage for a quick bite in summertime when they thrive the most.
Moist garbage is a perfect breeding place. They will lay 75 to 150 eggs at a
time, which will hatch into the larval stage, white worm-like maggots. House flies
grow quickly! In warm weather, they can go from egg to adult in just 7 to 10 days,
while in cooler weather, it may take up to a month.
House flies have some amazing adaptations: Feet with claws grab whatever they touch
down on, and hairs provide traction on slippery surfaces. Tiny hairs are sensory organs
allowing them to taste with a quick touch. But perhaps their eyes are the most fascinating:
Each one is made up of thousands of tiny lenses. Instead of seeing one clear picture, they see
many small images, like a mosaic. This helps them sense movement very fast!
This amazing insect is also found on food crops of the world, helping those industries through
pollination; they are known to visit over 20% of major crops! They are also an important food
source for reptiles, amphibians, and birds. If house flies are giving you trouble, keep your
garbage covered tightly!
