street vet Dr. Kwane Stewart and vet
tech Kayla Plucinski. This issue’s
Humane Hero brings fun to the street
dogs of Marrakesh, Morocco. We
unearth how frogs survive winter,
and learn the meaning of resilience
from one feisty, paraplegic kitty!

TRY THIS AT HOME!

After reading “At Work in Veterinary Medicine,” ask your child
what they think the best and hardest parts of these jobs are.
Would they want to do a job like this when they grow up? Why
or why not? Show the video clips below of vets or vet techs in
action. Ask your child to choose one of the two professions and
imagine doing it for a day. How does their day start? Then what
do they do next? How are they feeling as they are doing their
duties? How do they feel at the end of the day? Story starters or
prompts may get children thinking:
• “I am a veterinarian in a city. First, I walk to where pets are in
need. Then, I give medicines to help pets. Then I_________
…I feel ______________.”
• “I am a veterinary technician in a small town. Many pets come
to see me. First, I draw their blood. After that I_________
…I feel ___________ because __________.”
To extend the activity, have your child play the roles of
veterinarian/veterinary technician, pet owner, and pet with
yourself, siblings, or other family members.
