KIND TIME
Welcome to a new
school year filled
with the promise
of kindness and
curiosity for the
animals around us!
We’re starting the school
year with a basic lesson on how
to recognize happiness and fear in our best
canine friends. Our Humane Hero is a 7th
grader who helps pets and people get the
food they need. We also celebrate two
very special roosters: one cuddler, one
protector — both saved by another set of
heroes: those providing care and sanctuary
for roosters used in fighting.

Teaching kindness while
helping to instill good
reading habits in children.
SUPPLEMENTAL ACTIVITY
Try this at home:
To go with Humane Hero, “Reed Feeds Pets in Need”:
After reading the article, discuss how Reed took
action to help others. What needs were there, and
what did he do to meet them? Then take five minutes
to brainstorm as many needs that people or animals
in your community have. Decide on one or two of the
most important needs, and brainstorm ways you
might help. Some questions to consider:
• What is the need? Who has the need?
• Why is it important?
• What ideas do you have to help?
• Pick your favorite way to help. What resources
(either physical ones like materials, or people,
like additional volunteers) would you need to
accomplish your idea?
• What are some challenges with accomplishing
this idea?
Decide on a service project to do together with your
child or with other family members.
